lost not found

Last week I was in London, travelling back to Madrid, and before my flight I went into the toilet of the Club Aspire lounge at Gatwick South to change into something more comfortable.

In those few minutes, I left my wallet and passport behind.

Credit cards, cash, passport, driving licence, ID card. Everything.

The frustrating part is that I have a protocol for this.

Passport and wallet always go in the same place. Always. No exceptions.

It is boring, repetitive and slightly obsessive. Which is exactly why it works.

But that day, I had left my luggage at the hotel and changed the routine. I put the wallet and passport in my trolley, where I could lock them securely.

Later, while changing in the lounge toilets, I took them out.

And I forgot to put them back.

One small deviation.

One expensive mistake.

Since then, I have followed every other procedure. Phone calls. Emails. Lost-property forms. Messages to the lounge. Messages to the airport.

A week later, nothing.

No wallet. No passport. No cash.

Just cancelled cards, replacement documents and the slow administrative punishment that follows one careless move.

Most stories like this end with a kind stranger, a recovered wallet and faith in humanity restored.

This one does not.

Systems protect us because they remove the need to make good decisions in the moment.

Until we decide to make an exception.

And sometimes one exception is enough.
